A young cycle athlete was crushed to death by a tourist bus on Route Twisk this morning, after reportedly straying into the opposite lane during a descent on his bike.

Chi Chung Fung, 26, was cycling his red Specialized racing bike down Route Twisk towards Tsuen Wan at 11.11am when, according to police, he lost control, dashed into the opposite lane and was struck by a coach driven by 50-year-old Mr Tsang.

Ambulance crews rushed Fung to Yan Chai Hospital, unconscious and with severe head injuries. He was certified dead just 30 minutes later. The coach driver was not arrested.

Fung was an active and experienced sports cyclist, logging 3,651 km this year to date over 123 rides, according to his Strava profile. He set his own personal records on several segments, including Shing Fung Road, just two days ago.

Route Twisk has a deadly history of fatal crashes. In March this year, a motorcylist was killed after a pile-up with another bike and car, and in 2014, a young motorcyclist was killed after a collision with a People’s Liberation Army jeep, after apparently straying onto the wrong side of the road.
