Kwun Tong’s new Public Transport Interchange was designed to improve traffic in the district

Police have held a 72-year-old green minibus driver after a deadly crash in Kwun Tong this morning in which a woman died crossing a road.

The victim, Ms Ng, 61, was crossing Hong Ning Road when she was struck by the minibus. She was rushed, unconscious, to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was declared dead shortly after her arrival.

The driver, Mr Cheng, has now been arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained.

The crash happened in the shadow of the Urban Renewal Authority’s new Public Transport Interchange (PTI), which opened in April as part of the Kwun Tong Town Centre redevelopment project. 21 minibus routes were consolidated into the PTI, which the government said would “alleviate traffic in Kwun Tong”.

There were no pedestrians killed or seriously injured by minibuses in 2019 or 2020, according to Transport Department data. One passenger died in 2020 after a minibus driver moved off as she was alighting, while 30 passengers and drivers were seriously injured in minibus crashes that year.
