Six ambulances were still on the scene, with an ambulance crew member saying 10 children were injured – all are now stable

10 kindergarten students were hurt in a school bus crash in Lai Chi Kok this morning when a bus driver apparently drove into a traffic sign on Lai King Hill Road.

According to ambulance officers at the scene at 9.30am this morning, all 10 children, aged around 3 to 5 years old, were stable and being sent to Princess Margaret Hospital.

The bus was not badly damaged in the smash, which a witness says likely happened “at very low speed”

Martin Turner, who was cycling past at the time, said there were “ambulances everywhere”, and that one child was still being treated in an ambulance at 9.30am. Turner counted at least six ambulances still on the scene at 9.30am, as well as a Fire Services Command truck.

According to Turner, the 19-seater bus had driven into the ‘keep left’ sign in front of traffic light at the pedestrian crossing outside Happy Villa.

The students attended a kindergarten in Cheung Sha Wan, said police officers at the scene.

The driver was not injured in the crash, which caused minor damage to the front bumper of the bus.

School buses have been widely criticised in recent years, with parents noting bus drivers smoking while driving and a string of dangerous crashes, including one in December 2018 which left four dead and a crash in Sha Tin in June this year which saw 24 injured.

There were 119 injuries on non-franchised buses in Hong Kong last year, with victims ranging from 3 to 91 years old.
