A man using a bicycle is ticketed by cops during a Yuen Long “Traffic Day” road safety operation, just 100 metres from where a woman was fatally struck by a van driver on the same day.
The woman killed by a van driver on 29 December was struck just yards from a “Traffic Day” road safety campaign run on the same day by Yuen Long cops, Transit Jam has learned.
72 cyclists were ticketed during the police operation, labelled “Traffic Day” but later described as a “bicycle enforcement operation” and which police said aimed to combat “bicycle offences, such as failing to follow traffic lights or traffic signs, cycling on the pavement and reckless or careless cycling”.
But the action, under the shadow of Long Ping MTR station, failed to save Ms Ho, 75, who was killed crossing a road just 100 metres away under the same station bridge on the same day.
Police photos of the Traffic Day show tickets being given to cyclists on Ping Shun Street, a road usually replete with illegal parking and parking on the pavement.
“The police attaches great importance to road safety and will continue to take relevant enforcement actions and appeal to all cyclists to abide by traffic regulations,” said the force.
The van driver who struck and killed Ho, was arrested by police and has been released on bail.
Police figures reveal that the number of bicycle riders prosecuted has doubled in the first nine months of 2021, compared with the same period of 2020, while the number of pedestrian offences identified has risen 159%.

To be clearer, the death of the woman was caused by a van driver, not a bicycle. The police were giving tickets to cyclists when the crash occured.
