CORRECTION: MAX PENALTY UNDER BICYCLE HELMET LAW $2,000, NO PRISON

Bike helmets are optional in Hong Kong - but the government is seeking to mandate their use

In an earlier story published 10 July, 2022 we claimed the maximum penalty for not wearing an approved cycle helmet to be at Level 2, ie $5,000 and three months prison.

In fact, with the release of the English documents today, we find this was a mistake, with that penalty to be levied at motorcycle and motor-tricycle passengers.

For bicycle riders the maximum fine will be set at Level 1, a $2,000 fine and no prison.

We apologise for the error, which came from a mis-translation of documents previously only available in Chinese.
