Police last night arrested a 50-year-old pickup truck driver after video surfaced online of a truck running over a dog on a Yuen Long.
A dashcam video posted online showed the blue Ford Ranger truck driving south on Kung Um Road at around 4:30pm yesterday afternoon, and making a right turn onto an unnamed public road. As the driver pulled across the pavement he ran over the dog, which appeared to suffer at least one broken leg. The dog hopped away but, according police, later died.
Police caught up with the driver a few hours later. A police source said the man is a “non-Chinese” Pakistani national with a Hong Kong ID and he is still being detained this morning.
He faces charges of dangerous driving, failure to report an accident involving injury to a specific animal and failure to stop after an accident involving injury to a specified animal.
Under new laws gazetted in 2021 after a spate of pets and strays killed by motorists, cats and dogs were added to the “specified animals” list, which previously included horses, cattle, asses, mules, sheep, pigs and goats.
A driver failing to stop upon a crash involving these animals is liable to a $10,000 fine and imprisonment for 12 months, whereas failing to provide particulars and report to the Police as soon as possible and within 24 hours is liable to a $25,000 fine and imprisonment for six months.
