An 81-year-old woman, surnamed Hui, was run over and killed by the driver of a Medium Goods Vehicle on Kai Tin Road early this morning (31 March).
51-year-old Mr Ng was driving the truck south on Kai Tin Road. According to reports, the accident took place just yards from the pedestrian crossing near Kai Tin shopping centre: Hui had started to cross when the road traffic light turned green and the trucker lurched forward, hitting the elderly woman and trapping her underneath.
Firemen rescued Hui, and with serious head injuries she was rushed to United Christian Hospital unconscious. She was certified dead at 8:54am.
Ng was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and, at 16:15 was still being detained for further enquiries. Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon East is underway. Hui’s death is the 24th fatality on Hong Kong’s roads this year; she becomes the 15th pedestrian to be victim of a road accident in the last three months.
