A driver in a private car knocked down and killed an 89-year old man outside Happy Valley Police Station this morning.
At around 11.30am, Mr Yu was crossing the road outside the police station on Sing Woo Road. The 45-year-old driver of the car, Mr Lau, was travelling southeast along Sing Woo Road when he struck and knocked down the victim.
Yu was rushed to Ruttonjee Hospital, unconscious, and was certified dead at 1.49pm.
Police arrested Lau for dangerous driving causing death, detaining him for questioning. Lau was still in police custody at 8.30pm.
Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Hong Kong Island is underway. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information should contact the investigating officers on 3660 6838 or 3660 6800.
According to public police figures, Yu’s death is the 17th pedestrian fatality in 2020 to date, out of a total of 27 road deaths: 15 of those have died after being hit by a moving vehicle, making such deaths the most common road carnage in Hong Kong this year by far.
