DRIVER KILLED IN BORDER VILLAGE SMASH

The driver, Mr Lai, 35, lost control approaching border village Ping Che

A driver died when he lost control of his car and overturned on a slope outside Ping Che village last night (23 May).

According to police, the driver, Mr Lai, 35, and his passenger, also Mr Lai, 60, were travelling along Ping Che Road towards Sha Tau Kok Road, near lamppost EB4915, at 10.38pm when they lost control. The car rammed through railings, fell into a small ravine and overturned.

Firemen rescued the driver who was trapped in the car. Medics rushed him to North District Hospital, unconscious, but could not save him and he was pronounced dead at 11.42pm. His passenger was injured and taken, conscious, to the same hospital.

Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North is underway. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information to offer should contact the investigating officers on 3661 3800 or 3661 3858.

There have been 418 serious traffic accidents in the first four months of this year, with 37 deaths and 411 serious injuries.
