The scene of the crash in Sha Tin, with the taxi turning right at the time of the collision

A food delivery rider was knocked off his motorbike and hospitalised after smashing into a taxi that swung across the carriageway in Sha Tin last night.

According to police reports, the 40-year-old rider, who they did not name “as he is a non-ethnic Chinese”, was riding northwest along Yuen Chau Kok Road in Sha Tin when taxi driver Mr Chan, 53, turned right into Kong Pui Street from the southbound carriageway of Yuen Chai Kok Road, crossing the rider’s path. The rider slammed into the taxi, smashing the passenger-side front window and heavily denting the door.

Emergency crews rushed the rider to Prince of Wales Hospital, unconscious, where he remains in critical condition.

Eye witnesses said there was takeout food strewn across the road in the smash. Police arrested Chan for dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm.

Rider injuries are becoming more common as food delivery rises – this Deliveroo rider escaped serious injury after being struck by a taxi driver in Sheung Wan last summer
