A young woman is fighting for her life after a horrific high-speed crash in Fanling yesterday knocked her around 30 metres off her bicycle.
Video footage shows the woman, Ms Yeung, 23, crossing Jockey Club Road towards the cycle track on the other side of the road. As she crossed into the carriageway from the centre refuge of the pedestrian crossing, she cycled straight into the path of a moving car, being driven by 22-year-old Mr Lee.
Police say Lee could not avoid Yeung and they collided, with Yeung bounced from the bonnet of the car and tossed some 30 metres by the collision. The damage on the car after the crash shows the energy involved, with severe denting on the bonnet and a caved-in windscreen.
Yeung was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital, unconscious, with severe head, arm and leg injuries. The driver suffered minor face, hand and chest injuries and was taken to hospital conscious.
It is not clear from the footage whether the lights were in Yeung’s favour or not, nor what the speed of the car was – police say they have no reason at present to arrest the driver.
Lee was driving the car, decked in “Prestige Performance” body kit, on a probationary driving licence.
Prince of Wales Hospital says Yeung was still critical as at 11.24am this morning.
