GOLDENSUN BUSTS 200 NIGHT RIDERS IN NEW TERRITORIES NORTH

A cyclist without a front light gets a ticket in the latest Goldensun operation, now targeting night-time riders

Police ticketed 210 cyclists in New Territories North over the weekend, building on the government’s “Goldensun” cycling crusade with a new-style operation to catch riders cycling without lights.

Cops said the “anti-cycling offence” operation was specifically targeted those who “did not turn on their lights at night, while also catching cyclists suspected of  other bicycle offences such as failure to comply with traffic lights or traffic signs”.

Separately, 23 cyclists and pedestrians were summonsed in a Mong Kok operation ostensibly designed to bust illegal parking in the district yesterday. Police also gave 1,103 parking tickets and towed 13 illegally parked cars in the operation.

Police figures reveal that the number of bicycle riders prosecuted has doubled in the first nine months of 2021, compared with the same period of 2020, while the number of pedestrian offences identified has risen 159%.

Police in Mong Kok also took action against cyclists and pedestrians yesterday, summonsing 23 during an operation to enforce illegal parking
