The scene of the deadly hit-and-run in Tsing Yi yesterday morning – the driver fled but was caught by police 16 hours later
Police say they have found and arrested the driver of a truck who fled the scene after smashing into a road worker in Tsing Yi yesterday morning.
59-year-old Mr Zhang and his truck were found on Kwai Tai Road, Kwai Chung at about 7pm last night, 16 hours after the fatal crash, police say.
They arrested Zhang for dangerous driving causing death, leaving after a traffic accident and failing to report to the police after a traffic accident.
Zhang is being detained for questioning.
The fatal hit-and-run happened at 3:18am yesterday morning on the southbound lanes of Tsing Sha Highway near Nam Wan Tunnel, Tsing Yi. A 60-year-old male worker was fatally struck by the truck, with the driver fleeing the scene.
The worker, who police said was “non-ethnic Chinese” and did not name, sustained serious multiple injuries in the crash and died in hospital shortly afterwards.
He is the sixth person to die on Hong Kong’s roads in two weeks: five of them were struck by vehicles while one bus driver was killed when his bus ploughed into an illegally parked coach.
