MAN KILLED AT SAI KUNG PEDESTRIAN CROSSING, TRUCK DRIVER ARRESTED

A man’s shopping and shoes lie scattered under a truck after the victim was dragged around 10 metres from a pedestrian crossing to his death

A man aged around 80 was crushed to death under a truck as he crossed a pedestrian crossing in Sai Kung.

The man, who has not yet been identified by police, was crossing Hiram’s Highway at the pedestrian refuge at Tai Chung Hau Road just before 6am this morning. He was struck by a truck, driven by a man in his twenties, and dragged some 10 metres before the driver brought the truck to a stop.

The victim was rushed to Tseung Kwan O Hospital unconscious and died just half an hour after the crash.

Police would not speculate on the cause of the crash.

Photos from the scene show the victim’s morning shopping – frozen chicken wings and a carrot – and his shoes – still on the road surface under the truck.

80% of pedestrian deaths in 2021 involved a victim aged 60 or above, according to the latest figures from Transport Department.

In fact more than one pedestrian a week was killed in 2021. Three-quarters of those deaths happened in daylight in clear, dry weather conditions, as was the case in this morning’s death.
