The scene on Water Street after the driver of the white Hiace struck an elderly woman – she died three days later in hospital
An 89-year-old woman has died in hospital three days after a van driver knocked her down in Western District.
Ms Lau was at the junction of Water Street and Queen’s Road West around lunchtime on Saturday when she was struck by the right-turning Hiace van, driven by 62-year-old Mr Wong.
Lau was taken conscious to Queen Mary Hospital, where her condition deteriorated. She died yesterday morning.
Police arrested driver Wong for dangerous driving causing death and released him on bail. He must report back to police in mid-December.
“The Police severely condemn the irresponsible driving behavior of the driver involved in the case,” said a statement from the police.
Hong Kong elderly are far more likely to die than be seriously injured in a crash: last year, while the 60+ age group accounted for just over half of all serious or fatal crash injuries, that age group accounted for eight out of 10 of pedestrian deaths. Around a third of all pedestrians killed last year were 80 or over.
