MAN IN COMA AFTER BEING RUN OVER TWICE AT BAUHINIA TOURIST SPOT

A man is trapped under a car after being hit twice on Expo Drive. Fire crews used a red tarpulin to shield the gory rescue from inquisitive tourists

A 69-year-old man remains unconscious after being knocked down by a taxi and then a private car at a tourist spot in Wan Chai yesterday.

The victim, Mr Leung, was first knocked down on Expo Drive at 5:46pm by a taxi driven by 71-year-old Mr Tsang.

According to police, Tsang then fled the scene in his taxi: but Leung was hit yet again by a BMW driven by Ms Li, 41.

Leung was trapped under Li’s car and rescued by fireman, with hundreds of bus tourists and illegal hawkers gawping at the scene from adjacent Bauhinia Square: the victim was sent to Queen Mary Hospital where he remains unconscious this morning.

Police caught up with taxi driver Tsang at Pacific Place a few hours later and arrested him for dangerous driving.

The BMW driver was not arrested.

Road safety campaigners have criticised the new road layout around Bauhinia Square and Expo Drive as “like a racetrack”, while pedestrians face a long detour across wide roads to walk between local attractions.

The Bauhinia Square crash marked one of 86 traffic crashes on the Hong Kong roads yesterday, including a serious incident in Kwun Tong at 3:46pm where a 74-year-old minibus passenger suffered head injuries following “frenzied driving” of the 60-year-old green minibus driver.

That minibus driver, Mr Liu, was found to be drunk and was arrested.
