HGV DRIVER ARRESTED AS VESPA RIDER CRUSHED TO DEATH UNDER TRUCK

Mr Tang, 66, was killed when his Vespa was caught under the wheels of a heavy cement truck in Cheung Sha Wan today

Police have arrested a 36-year-old cement truck driver after a fatal crash on a Cheung Sha Wan highway which killed a 66-year-old Vespa rider.

The driver of the ageing cement truck dragged Tang’s Vespa for around 30 metres after the collision

The scooter rider, Mr Tang, was riding alongside the heavy truck on Kwai Chung Road towards Tsuen Wan when the two vehicles reportedly collided on the flyover across Lai Chi Kok Park.

The cement truck dragged the scooter for perhaps 30 metres after the collision, leaving Tang’s body in the road.

Tang was certified dead at the scene, his scooter crushed between the front two sets of truck wheels.

The truck driver, Mr Chan, was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained amid further enquiries.

In the first nine months of this year, there were 70 deaths on Hong Kong’s roads and an average of around 47 injuries per day, with five of those serious or life-changing.
