The taxi that hit an elderly couple in Tsing Yi Saturday morning: an 81-year-old woman died while her 88-year-old husband is in critical condition
An 81-year-old woman died in hospital early this morning while her husband remains in a critical state in the same hospital, after both were hit by a taxi driver as they took a morning walk in Tsing Yi yesterday morning.
Ms Chiu, 81, and her husband Mr Ip, 88, were walking on Chung Mei Road at 6:50am on Saturday morning when they were struck by a taxi driven by Mr Chung, 75.
Chiu was knocked unconscious with serious head and abdomen injuries while her husband was less seriously injured. But as night fell things took a turn for the worse for both husband and wife, with Chiu passing away at 1:05am on Sunday without regaining consciousness and Ip slipping into critical condition.
The husband-and-wife tragedy came just hours before another fatal taxi crash in Kowloon Bay, in which a 63-year-old woman, Ms Chen, was killed crossing the road outside Kowloon Bay MTR station. Taxi driver Mr Wu, 59, was driving the taxi along Kwun Tong Road towards Wong Tai Sin at 4:18am when the crash occurred.
Chen was rushed to United Christian Hospital unconscious and with serious head injuries, and was certified dead 35 minutes after the crash.
