The junction where Ms Ho, 75, lost her life crossing a road

Police arrested a van driver yesterday morning after a fatal pedestrian collision which killed a 75-year-old woman.

Driver Mr Choi, 42, was turning right into Ma Wang Road underneath Long Ping MTR station at 8:30am, when he struck Ms Ho, who was crossing Ma Wang Road.

Ho was knocked unconscious in the crash, and died half an hour later in hospital.

Choi was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

The crash marks a bloody end to the year on Hong Kong’s roads, with 2021 on track to see a 15% rise in road casualties.

In the first 11 months of 2021, Hong Kong saw 19,338 road injuries, 90 of them fatal.

In the whole of 2020, there were 18,360 casualties, a rate of around 23 road casualties per 1,000 vehicles. Singapore, by contrast, had a rate of around 7 road casualties per 1,000 vehicles in 2020.

Hong Kong also saw 12.1 fatalities per 100,000 vehicles in 2020 against 8.6 in Singapore that year.
