One of only two pedestrian crossings serving Kwun Tong’s Yau Mei Court along Lei Yue Mun Road

A police officer will appear in court today charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, after he drove a police car into a woman on a pedestrian crossing in Kwun Tong last year.

According to police, the driver, who is not named, was driving north along Lei Yue Mun Road on 29 November 2021 at 10:11pm when he “accidentally hit” Ms Cheung, 36, outside Yau Mei Court.

Cheung was knocked unconscious in the crash and sent to United Hospital. She suffered injuries to her hands and feet.

The driver tested negative for alcohol.

“The Police Force attaches great importance to the conduct of officers. Any officer who commits an illegal act will be dealt with strictly by the Police Force,” says a police brief.

The officer will appear in Kwun Tong Magistrates Court this morning, although the case is not yet listed on the Daily Cause List.

There were 2,815 pedestrian casualties on Hong Kong’s roads in 2021, up 22% on 2020.
