A motorcyclist has died after a head-on collision with a bus in Sau Mau Ping.

Police say 59-year-old Mr Chan was riding west along Sau Mau Ping Road just before 8am when he collided with a bus travelling in the opposite direction.

Chan was rushed to United Christian Hospital but declared dead shortly after admission.

Police arrested the driver of the KMB bus for dangerous driving causing death.

Separately, a 22-year-old motorbike rider crashed into a police car on Peak Road in the early hours of this morning.

Police say the rider, who they said was “non-Chinese” was riding down from the Peak when he lost control and crashed into a police car driving in the opposite direction.

An 18-year-old female passenger, described by police as a “foreigner”, was also injured in that crash.

Motorcyclists make up around a fifth of all serious and fatal crashes in Hong Kong.

According to Transport Department figures, 14 motorcyclists – 13 riders and 1 passenger – died in crashes in 2021, around 14.4% of all fatalities on the roads that year.
