The scene this morning after a Baguio garbage truck driver knocked down and killed a 93-year-old woman

A 93-year-old woman has died after a garbage truck driver ran her over on a Chai Wan side street this morning.

According to reports, 48-year-old Baguio employee Mr Leung was driving the government-contracted garbage truck eastbound on Yee Fung Avenue at 8:20am.

When approaching the junction with Kam Yuen Lane, he knocked down Ms Chiu who was crossing the road.

Chiu was trapped under the heavy vehicle and rescued by firemen, succumbing to her injuries just 25 minutes after the crash.

Police arrested driver Leung for dangerous driving causing death.

“Police strongly condemn the irresponsible driving behaviour of the driver. It not only jeopardises the safety of other road users and threatens ones’ personal safety, but is also the actual cause of serious traffic accidents. Police do not tolerate such acts and will take resolute enforcement action,” said a police statement.

A Tesla X burns after its driver lost control and smashed across a pavement into a lamppost

Also this morning, a Tesla X driver apparently lost control and smashed across a pedestrian footpath into a lamppost, with the vehicle then catching fire. No serious injuries were reported in the crash on Po Lam Road, Tseung Kwan O, although firefighters reportedly needed specialist foam to extinguish the burning batteries.

A police source estimated the vehicle to be travelling at high speed, given the force of the impact, but no arrests have yet been made. According to media reports, the driver of the high-powered HK$1 million car claimed an insect hit his face, causing him to suddenly swerve to the left.
