Police have arrested a habitual driving offender who was banned from driving for life in 2017 after multiple dangerous driving convictions, including causing a death and for driving with multiple suspensions.
The driver, a 46 year old, was caught in an anti-speeding operation on Tuen Mun Highway where police say he drove a red Ferrari sports car at twice the speed limit.
The driver failed an oral drug test and refused to provide a blood sample.
Police charged him with one count of dangerous driving, one count of driving while license suspended, one count of driving without third-party insurance and one count of refusing to provide a blood sample for drug testing.
The driver had been found responsible for the death of a 26-year-old female motorcycle passenger in 2007 after he drove his car into her motorcycle, and had been jailed for 22 months and banned from driving until 2015 for that death.
But after being released, the man continued to drive and ride motorcycles with little respect for the law.
In 2017, he was seen driving a stolen motorcycle at high speed around the streets of Kwai Chung, eventually crashing the bike and abandoning it to flee on foot. Police later arrested him in Mong Kok.
The driver will appear in Sha Tin Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning (7 September).
“The Police will not relent in combating such irresponsible behavior that disregards the safety of other road users and severely condemns it,” said a police statement, warning that driving while suspended and drug-impaired driving were serious crimes which would result in jail sentence upon conviction.
Police charged 26 people with drug driving offences in the first half of 2024, down 19% on the first half of 2023.
