DELIVERY CYCLIST GORED BY DUMP TRUCK, DRIVER ARRESTED

A 31-year-old rider was trapped under the heavy truck after being run over on Causeway Road

Police have arrested a dump truck driver for dangerous driving after a delivery cyclist was run over and trapped under the heavy vehicle in Causeway Bay this afternoon.

Driver Mr Chen, 27, was driving westbound along Causeway Road alongside the 31-year-old delivery rider at around 3pm today. But, according to online video, at the junction with Tung Lo Wan Road, the truck driver suddenly swung left without signalling, smashing over the rider and pinning him down.

The cyclist, who was named only as “non-Chinese” by police, was trapped under the dump truck but eventually managed to free himself.

He was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in a semi-conscious state with foot injuries.

A large amount of blood mingled with delivery food was seen seeping from under the truck, while the mangled bike remained stuck under the chassis.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious bodily injury and is being detained by police.

According to Transport Department, 1,850 cyclists were injured on Hong Kong’s roads last year, 93 of them seriously and six of them fatally.

Only a few days ago, mainland cycling star and Liv brand ambassador Hayley Pan was killed by a crash involving a coach on a Lantau road.
