HORRIFIC BUS CRASH KILLS DRIVER: BUS PLOUGHS INTO ILLEGALLY PARKED COACH

The driver’s cabin was completely crushed in the smash

A bus driver died last night after his bus smashed into a stationary coach illegally parked in the outside lane of a road leading to the KMB Cheung Sha Wan depot.

Mr Lo, 43, was headed south on Lai Po Road towards Container Port Road South just before 1am when his bus smashed into the KMB staff coach. The driver’s cabin was completely crushed and it took a huge team of fire and ambulance workers about 90 minutes to rescue the driver.

Lo was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital unconscious and was certified dead at 2:55am. There were likely no passengers aboard, says a police source, as the bus was thought to be returning to the depot.

The driver of the staff coach, Mr Wong, 53, suffered hand and foot injuries and was sent to Princess Margaret Hospital conscious.

Police say they have made no arrests and an “investigation” is underway.

Collisions with stationary illegally parked vehicles around the container terminals is a systemic issue: a man died last October when he and his motor scooter hit an illegally parked stationary crane on Container Port Road South. That crane bore no warnings or hazard lights.

And video taken by Transit Jam in April 2022 shows illegally parked trucks even on the highway slip road to Container Port Road South, a danger for drivers coming off the highway, especially at night.
